Install and use the Web Reader

Readlang’s Web Reader lets you:

  1. Read and translate within the original web page.
  2. Import the article to read on Readlang.

Install as Chrome Extension

This only works on desktop Chrome and other browsers which support installing Chrome Extensions, for example Kiwi browser for Android.

Install the extension using this link: Chrome extension

This will place a green “R” button next to the address bar, click it when on the webpage you want to visit.

Learn how to install and use the Chrome extension in this video:

Install as bookmarklet

This works exactly like the Chrome Extension, except that instead of a green “R” button, it becomes a link in your bookmarks bar.

Visit this page and drag the bookmarklet link into your bookmarks bar to install.

Install bookmarklet on specific browsers

Known issues with bookmarklet

3rd party cookies (cross site tracking) are disabled

If you have 3rd party cookies disabled (understandable!) then you’ll need to make an exception for readlang.com so that the bookmarklet can connect to your Readlang account even when running within another website. To do this in macOS Firefox (other desktop browsers have similar settings):

  1. Open Firefox->Preferences menu item

  2. Within the Firefox Settings page, select the Privacy & Security tab

  3. Click the “Manage Exceptions…” button

  4. In the “Address of website” field, enter “https://readlang.com” and click “Add Exception”

  5. Click “Save Changes”

On mobile browsers you may find that you can’t selectively enable 3rd party cookies (cross site tracking) for specific sites and you just need to completely enable it. Sorry about this!

It won’t work on a specific website

Unfortunately the Web Reader bookmarklet won’t work on certain websites which prevent external scripts from running. Unfortunately the list of such websites is growing over the years as websites are adding more security measures. One way around this is to use the Readlang Web Reader Chrome Extension instead which is able to run on a greater number of websites (although there will still be some that it won’t work on).

You can also download this as a progressive web app (PWA) on all desktop browesers and on android browsers (except for edge - that has a bug)

Right, but the PWA is for reading and practicing on readlang.com, which is different from the Web Reader, which is described above and let’s you use Readlang’s translation and importing tools on other websites. Installing the PWA as a full screen web-app is explained here: Install Readlang on your iPhone, iPad or Android home screen

Hi Steve, so far the readlang has been the greatest tool I be ever used in my language learning process however if it is possible to give more support on Apple mobile devices, for example developing a safari extension instead of using bookmarklet. I’ve tried to install readlang chrome extension on iPhone by using browsers that support extensions but so far those browsers like Orion don’t work very well with those extensions. But it’s important to have the same smooth experience on iPhone as most of the time I would read the material while I am commuting like on the subway. Thanks for your dedication on developing a useful tool for language learners across the globe

I’d love an Android/iOS app as well, but if it helps you, the workaround I’ve been using is to use the “Import to Readlang” feature on the desktop Chrome extension on a bunch of news articles in advance, so I can read them on my phone later on.

Yes! This is what I do and what I recommend to people for the moment while the web reader/importer experience isn’t great on mobile. (Hopefully one day it’ll improve)

Yes recently I’ve been actively investing the workaround the I found this too, sometimes I would also copy the words by using safari reading mode and then past the text to readlang. However I still sincerely hope one day we can see an app or safari extension
