Can we add a delete button so we can delete flashcards we don’t want to see anymore? I have to click on Edit before I can delete it so deleting requires extra work. We could place it right next to the Edit button.
Also a keyboard shortcut for deleting would be extremely useful. I like to use the keyboard when reviwing them. Being able to pressing the delete button or D would speed up the process even more.
This shortcut would also be useful in the reading mode. Sometimes I find myself translating words and phrases I don’t want to be converted into flashcards. Right now I have to open the Words tab to delete these flashcards, which isn’t very convenient. With the Keep Flashcard option enabled, I imagine that by pressing Ctrl + D the currently selected phrase or word will be deselected and the corresponding flashcard deleted.
A button with the same function somewhere would also be appreciated, especially by mobile users who don’t have keyboards.
Just to make absolutely sure there’s no misunderstanding here: do you not like the “Delete Flashcard” mode because you like being able to click again to remove the highlight and translation while retaining the flashcard? (perhaps because you like the reader page to be clean and not full of highlights)
Yes, exactly. I click on a word/phrase, check the translation, and deselect it to keep the screen clean.
As a matter of fact, the screen being clean is so important to me, that when I started with Readlang I was looking for an option not to display translations on the screen at all (as opposed to highlighting, underlining, or replacing), expecting to look up translations in the Explain tab, but I settled for replacing.
One other quick suggestion that just came to my mind:
On mobile, and maybe on PC as well, it would be nice to implement two ways of deselecting words - short tap/click and long tap/click.
The short tap/click would deselect the word/phrase and implement the default behavior, the long tap/click would do the opposite.
So in my case, for example, I have the Keep Flashcard option toggled on;
with this feature implemented, upon deselecting a word/phrase with a short tap/click the corresponding flashcard is going to remain in my deck. Upon deselecting it with a long tap/click the corresponding flashcard is going to be removed from the deck.
With the Delete Flashcard option these behaviors would be swapped.
Adding some simple visuals that go along with each behavior would also make it more clear to the user what happened to the word/phrase.
Oh wow. I assumed no-one was using the “Replace” mode any more. I was actually planning to remove it to make room for a new style which would highlight and place a translation above, like “Highlight” but without altering the layout of the page, so that the translation would actually obscure some of the text on the line(s) above. This is because for some users the fact that the text reflows upon translation, changing the page layout, is annoying. How would you feel if I did this?
Maybe… it wouldn’t be that discoverable though. I think most people
(including myself) aren’t used to longtapping on websites unless it’s to use the operating system’s copy to clipboard functionality. If I did do this I think it would make sense to show a context menu allowing the user to Edit or Delete. Will keep in mind but no promises.
Well, maybe I’m the last person who uses it, please don’t remove it
What you’re planning to implement sounds like a mix of both Highlight and Replace options. For me personally, this option would be more convenient than the former, because a jittery, moving text is jarring, but still less convenient than the latter - the translation is going to obfuscate words unpredictably. With replacement, I know exactly what words are going to be hidden (the ones I’m selecting). Additionally, since there is a limit of 12 words per translation, I expect this new option to be pretty inconvenient with longer sentences, especially if you’re translating the second half of it. The translation is going to cover the first half, which contains the necessary context to understand the whole sentence.
I would like to see as little movement on the reading page as possible (ideally none) while displaying as much original text as possible (ideally all of it). Replacing is the closest thing to it.
But I would like to mention that the option I was initially looking for would only be ideal for me on PC because the Explain tab is always open. So even if you had implemented it, Replace would still be my go-to option on mobile, because I would like to move my thumb as little as possible when I’m dozing off to a book (Quick note: consider adding a swiping motion on mobile, from right to left for example, to expand the hamburger menu; stretching your thumb, or for those who read on tablets, moving your hand, to the upper-right corner can get a bit tiring).
Any way we can add a delete button as well that would be available on Mobile? It would be great to be able to delete words easily while reviewing flashcard on the mobile phone. To your point, flashcards are great when one has a short period of time and that’s often the case away from one’s desk/ on the phone.
I have many words that I’ve either internalized already or group of words that I don’t want to see again, so that’s a useful feature. I never edit flashcards. I do delete a lot of them though. No point in seeing again something I looked up in the past but I’ve since internalized.
What I’ve just done is to stop the translation field from auto focussing on mobile. This means that when you tap the EDIT button the on-screen keyboard won’t automatically slide up and the DELETE button will be in the exact same place on the screen, so you can effectively just double tap on EDIT to delete the word. (There is currently also a prompt to confirm that you definitely want to go ahead with the deletion too. I had wanted to offer an “undo” button instead of this confirmation prompt, but that was more difficult so for now that’s how it is.) Please refresh any open Readlang tab on your mobile browser to try this new behavior.
