I am learning Swedish. Every time I leave the text I am practicing or even go back a page words don’t stay highlighted/translated, although they are still being added to the word list. Is this intended and I am simply misunderstanding something, or is it a bug? I was about to switch from LingQ to Readlang permanently as a paying user, but this UI behavior is a deal breaker and just defeats the whole purpose of this approach to learning.
This is intended, if you are looking for more similar functionality to LingQ, I’d use linguaverbum.com
Please check out the Auto-Highlight feature to see if that works for you.
My preference is for a more distraction-free reading interface and this is reflected in Readlang’s design.
If I understand correctly, you’re using the free version, and you’re talking about words you’ve already clicked on to look up. If this is the case, and if I remember correctly, only your first twenty words show up underlined. This was the main reason I went over to paid at the time, although there are now other advantages. Once you subscribe to the paid version, all the words you’ve looked up will show up underlined.
I had never poked around in the “Aa” tab options. That Auto-Highlight feature is really great since it lets you use it as a memory check. So you can keep the flashcard review much cleaner, with fewer words you don’t really need to see. And just in general you can spend less time looking at flashcards because you can easily scan for not-yet-learned vocabulary right in your texts. Nice.
I am learning German, and this app is excellent, which is why I subscribed. However, when I try to mark unknown words (with a star) so I can later study only those, I noticed that many words don’t get saved. They simply won’t save — even if I exit and re-enter the site or try through the app, nothing changes. Sometimes everything works normally, but other times, it won’t save anything. For example, if I try to save 10 words, only 3 or 4 might actually be saved — the rest are not.
This is starting to really bother me because the whole point of using this app was to quickly translate unknown words and create a list to learn from. I’ve paid for the yearly subscription, and I would really appreciate help resolving this issue.
Sorry about this. I’ve just fixed an issue which might have had this as a side effect although I’m not completely sure. Please keep an eye out for this happening again and if it does, please let me know! Also, if it continues happening, please let me know where you were starring the words, for example was it within the Word List (Words on mobile) tab here:
… or was it within the Words tab in the sidebar of the reading interface, or somewhere else?
Thanks!
For example, these are words I’ve collected from various texts I’ve read — words I didn’t know — and that’s how I build my personal list of unfamiliar vocabulary. The idea of marking unknown words with a star so they’re saved in one place later sounds great and very useful.
However, I’ve been experiencing issues: when I click on a word and then on the star to add it to my favorites, it often doesn’t show up there. I have to click multiple times — sometimes 3 or 4 times — and refresh the page just to get a single word to save. Sometimes the word even disappears over time, or I go through the process of marking unknown words, and in the end, I notice that only a small number were actually saved.
It happens here too😅
For example, right now I want to continue learning — that is, to build my collection of unknown words — but because of this issue, I’m starting to lose motivation. It feels pointless to keep reading texts if my list of unknown words isn’t being saved properly.
I completely understand. Can you both please clarify – is this still happening since my last message from about 10 minutes ago, since I’d just pushed an update which might () have fixed it?
I think it’s fine now, thank you. If any bugs come up, I’ll let you know.
Same problem like before
So, to confirm, you go to the Word List tab as in your screenshot, click the star icon on one or more words, and the star setting doesn’t save? (i.e. if you refresh the page the star isn’t there, and the word doesn’t appear within the “Starred” list). Is that correct? If you have any other information, please let me know
Yes, exactly — while I’m reading a text (depending on how difficult it is), I often come across more than 20 unfamiliar words in one complex article. So I start marking the unknown words — first I click on them, and the translation appears above the word, which works fine.
Then, as shown in the screenshot, I click on the star on the side to save the word to my favorites. However, when I finish the text or exit it and go to the archive (like in the screenshot I sent before), the most recent word or even several of the words I marked don’t appear there. For example, out of 10 words, only one or two actually get saved.
I hope you understand what I mean.
When do you think this issue could be fixed?
@Desert_Fox I’ve just been looking at your account and one clue is that you have quite a lot of words marked as Deleted, including some that were starred. You can see these here:
I’m wondering if perhaps you are clicking on the highlighted words to remove the highlight while reading without realizing that this will delete the word? If this is the case, and you want to click to remove the highlight to keep your reader page clean, you can do that without deleting the words by changing this setting: Delete Flashcards While Reading - Readlang Blog
I did that afterwards because I thought maybe the app got overloaded with too many saved words, and I wanted to make it easier to handle. However, even now when I try to mark new words, the same issue happens — I add the star to an unknown word, but for some reason it doesn’t show up in my saved list. I have to repeat the process several times for each word to get it to appear.
Could you please look at your list of Deleted words by opening the Word List and selecting Deleted at the left hand side of the page. Please check that the words in that list are words you actually intended to delete. I’m wondering whether the words in that “Deleted” list are the ones you are talking about which aren’t showing up for you. Please let me know.
I checked and reset everything back to how it was before. Then I deliberately started marking new words with the star to see if they would be added to my favorites — but nothing happened. I have to click on each word two or three times and mark it with the star again and again before it finally shows up in the favorites list.
