For the practise sessions, I’ve only been using Blitz mode and Classic Flashcards, and noticed that the new words mainly appear in Blitz mode. I rarely encounter new words in Classic Flashcards. Whenever I go to Blitz mode, a whole batch of new words suddenly appear. But in Classic Flashcards, I’m mainly reviewing the same set of words.
Is this experience by design?
Thanks for pointing this out. It wasn’t an intentional difference to be honest. I just implemented them both separately at different times.
I’ve now consolidated how they behave because it’s strange that they differ in this way. They now both follow the behavior of the classic flashcards which I think makes a bit more sense. Please try it for a while and if you have any feedback on the change, please feel free to share it here.
Hi Steve, I have understood the logic was just that new words and due words have completely equal odds of being chosen for the review session. Does that correspond to Blitz or Classic or neither?
They both would first fetch up to 60 words which are ready to test from the server. This can include both new words and/or due words. It prioritizes favorited words and words with higher frequencies in the language. The difference came with what the different practice modes would do with these words next. The classic flashcards session would take as many words as are required to fill up the session from the start of this list, then shuffle them, then start the session. The newer Blitz and Mastery sessions would take a random sample of words from these 60 depending on your session length. This means that whereas the Classic Flashcards were guaranteed to give you the “highest priority” words according to the algorithm, Blitz and Mastery were adding more of a random element to which words were selected, and this could result in favorited words being skipped in favor of newer words further down the list of 60. I’ve now adjusted this so that all practice types pull from the top of the list.
