Web Reader Word Count

How does the web reader extension count Words Read that it sends back to Readlang? I noticed my daily read count will go up twice if I translate two words from the same sentence. It also seems to increment based on how many words came before the translated word, but I can’t determine exactly where the stop is.

The Web Reader will use a very crude estimate of the number of words read based on:

  • your estimated reading speed (defaults to 180 wpm and updates only via your reading activity on readlang.com)
  • the period of time between each translation you made (this is different to how reading on readlang.com is counted, and it’s because the Web Reader is a more unpredictable environment where we can’t assume your intent is to read every word on the webpage you are on)

This is admittedly a very crude method, but it allows web reader use to contribute to your daily goal in a was that is somewhat meaningful.
