Suggestion: Tweak AI explanations to recognize when a word is not in the target language

I’m reading a novel in French which has some Spanish thrown in here and there, and most of the time I either understand the Spanish, or I can recognize it’s not French and therefore not relevant to my studies.

I recently highlighted one of these Spanish words unintentionally, and was surprised when the AI explanation didn’t indicate that the word wasn’t from my native language or target language — it just gave an explanation the same as it would for French.

I suspect others also run into this issue from time to time, coming across words from other languages besides the TL in a text. Is there a way to tweak the AI to intelligently detect when a highlighted word isn’t from the target language of the user?

Thanks for the feedback!

I can see how this would be useful in your case, but I’m wary of adding extra complication to the Explain prompt for this now. Might reconsider in future.

One idea which is probably less than ideal but which you can try right now is the new Ask AI feature: Ask AI: custom ChatGPT prompt feature for premium users (experimental).

You could try prompts like: “Is this a French word?” or even “Is this a French word which would be useful to learn for a learner at B2 level?” to see if they are helpful.
