Speaking mode: readlang will automatically read the already highlighted words even speaking mode is off

I am not sure if this is a bug or the readlang is just working like that. I don’t need readlang reads for me every time I translate a word. So I turned off the speaking mode in the settings (click profile and there are settings) and I also turned off the speaking mode button in reader (at top right there are three dots and click it there is speaking mode, I turned it off and there is no tick now before the speaking mode), now it won’t read the words if I click it for the first time, but if I click the word second time (already highlighted words), it will still read for me. So I think maybe it’s a bug. If it’s not, maybe I think adding a speaker button for users would be better. If users want know how words pronounce, they will click the speaker button.

I can’t reproduce this bug.

Note that the speaking mode checkmark on the Settings page controls the same setting as the one at the top of the reader page (in the three dots dropdown). So if you turn it off in one place that should be reflected in the other place too.

It is possible that things might get out of sync if you have Readlang open in multiple tabs or devices and then toggle the setting in one place. In this case you may need to refresh the tab in the other location for the setting to also apply there.

Thanks! That did help. I was testing without the Auto-Highlight Words option enabled which is why I couldn’t reproduce it. (I notice now that you did actually say “already highlighted words” in your original message)

It’s now fixed so it should never speak the words when Speaking Mode is disabled.

(It’s very possible there are limitations on uploading video, I’m just using the default Discourse forum settings)
