Hello. I have 2 queries relating to selecting phrases.
Is it possible to select a phrase when the words are split across a page break? This doesn’t seem to work for me.
if I have already selected a word to be defined individually it does not seem to be possible to then select it as part of a phrase - is there any way round that without deselecting the individual word ?
If I want to select a word both by itself and as part of a phrase, I’ll do it one way, then go back (or if necessary forward) a page, then reverse that so I’m back on the same page (with none of the translations shown), and now I select the other phrase.
If I want to select something that crosses a page break, often going back and then forward will make the whole phrase be at the bottom of the page because of the removal of translations. If it doesn’t, click on the location indicator (percent) at the bottom of your page and go back a little so that now the phrase will be entirely on one page.
I have an option selected that makes your work around for selecting a word both by itself and as part of a phrase not so effective for me (if I have understood correctly). When I delete a word/phrase I prefer that the associated flashcard is also deleted so I don’t end up with unwanted flashcards. If I understand your work around correctly I would have to choose between having the individual word or the phrase retained as a flashcard (or change my option so that deselecting a word/phrase does not delete the corresponding flashcard). For me it would be great if there were a way to save both the individual word, and one or more phrases that include it, as separate flashcards.
Great tips re working across page breaks - thank you.
I’m not sure what your use cases are around deleting cards, so I’m not addressing that. I’m only talking about adding cards. So this:
"If I understand your work around correctly I would have to choose between having the individual word or the phrase retained as a flashcard (or change my option so that deselecting a word/phrase does not delete the corresponding flashcard). "
isn’t right. If you add one phrase, change the page back and forth, and then add another overlapping phrase, you will have cards for both phrases, unless you are taking specific actions to delete something.
Changing pages doesn’t delete any cards. But when you go to or return to a page it doesn’t show the previous translations/cards, so now you can select other translations/cards without regard to the previous ones.
I think there may be some option that shows your translations all the time. I don’t have this on, so I’m describing things without that. With that, these workarounds probably won’t work .
Other workarounds for shifting the page break position are:
Temporarily resizing or zooming your browser window
If on mobile, temporarily rotating your device to landscape mode
Using Readlang’s sidebar accessible via the button at the top right of the reader page, then selecting the AA tab, and then decreasing the font size temporarily to fit more on the page
(I that realize all of these solutions feel a bit clunky.)
Thanks again for your time on this. Your workaround makes absolute sense but as you thought, I do have an option selected that deletes flashcards when the word/phrase in question is deselected. This option is in the “AA” tab - “On Deselect Word/Phrase” where you can choose between “delete flashcard” or “Keep flashcard”.
You are also right that I do indeed have my definitions highlighted all the time (“AA” tab - Auto Highloight Words - “All Your Words” which makes it impossible to go back to a page and include a previously selected work in a phrase without first cancelling the previous selection.
I suppose I could temporarily change both the above options to allow me to select both a word and a phrase containing that word and save them both as flashcards!
@Steve - I have no idea whether there might be a simple change that could could offer the best of all worlds in this use case but I imagine if it is only of limited appeal it may not warrant the work!
