Request: a way to turn off ChatGPT features throughout account

Hello, Steve!

I love the Readlang’s functionality and interface. Readlang is helping me read a lot more in my target language since I don’t have to stop and keep track of words for later or flip through a dictionary. What is really helpful to me as a language learner is the ability to translate both words and longer phrases as I go. Between the default dictionary and Google Translate, I feel like I have everything that I need.

However, I find that I don’t use the ChatGPT features all that often (a personal preference) and was curious if there was a way to hide them. For example, I can easily hide the Review Summary buttons in the sidebar by going to Aa > Review Summary Buttons > Hide. Would it be possible to do the same for the ChatGPT Explain feature for words? Sometimes this feature will automatically run when I open a word or I will accidentally click on it and I find it a bit distracting. Lastly, I don’t envision ever using the Generate Story feature in my Library and would love to be able to hide that button, as well.

I realize that many other Readlang users get a lot out of these features, but would you consider a way to hide ChatGPT features, either individually or across the site as a whole?

I have a similar experiences that is not as extreme - it seems that ai explanations are often generated automatically, e.g. when opening the side bar, but more often than not, it was not my intent to generate them (e.g. I need to open the sidebar and then go into the edit tab). I guess you could save a little bandwidth by only running these tools when I explicitly ask for them.

When it comes to the Explain feature, if you switch to the Dictionary tab instead, it should remember that setting for the duration you remain signed in to the same browser, so that next time you open the sidebar it will open on the Dictionary tab.

Thanks for your feedback on the Generate Story button and ChatGPT features more broadly. I’ll keep it in mind and if I hear the same from more people I’ll consider doing something about it.

I have the same opinion as Anna, that the ideal would be an option to wait on fetching the AI explanation until a button is pressed. The reason I would like to leave the Explain pane open is indeed because that is where the Edit button is. But it feels super wasteful to query the AI every time I click a word, just so that the Edit button is available.

However, I’ve realized that also the Words tab gives you a way to edit a word’s definition. So I’ll try making that my default.
