No play button on I phone

Hello,

I subscribed to readlang a week ago but I can‘t find the play button on my phone. I only see it on the laptop. My mobile is iphone 11.I have attached a photo. Is this a bug ?

It could be a bug, or perhaps your device doesn’t have a German voice installed, I’m not sure.

Please open your iOS Settings app and navigate to:

Accessibility → Read & Speak → Voices

Is German listed there with a voice on the right hand side? For me it shows “Anna”, which I think is the default one. Anna turns out to be the only voice that iOS makes available to web apps like Readlang at the moment, so please make sure that one is available. If it’s not shown, then tap on German → Voice and tap on Anna to download it if it’s not already downloaded.

Another thing worth trying is to switch your “I’m learning” language in Readlang to the language of your iPhone (English maybe?) and see if the Read Aloud button appears for texts of that language. If it doesn’t then it’s probably not the availability of voices which is the issue.

What version of iOS is your phone running?

The Anna voice is installed and i can hear the words when I click on a word to translate it.
I have IOS 18.0.
I know english and i am learning german.
I tried to change the phone language but still i can‘t see the play button.
Also I tried changing the language i am learning in readlang but still I have the same issue.

The issue might be because you are using iOS 18.0. There was a regression where many voices weren’t available via the Web Speech API that Readlang uses for the Read Aloud feature. This was fixed by Apple and in iOS 18.1.1 they were available again. There was a discussion about this at the time here: Read aloud is not working

(Note that the voice that speaks when you click a word to translate is a paid service provided by MS Azure instead of being generated on your device so this can remain working even though Read Aloud doesn’t)

I updated my device to IOS 18.7.8 and now I can see the play button. Thank you so much!
