I’m reading the book Шинель that I uploaded and I got to about location 1672 and all of a sudden multi-word phrases aren’t selecting. I drag the text and the translation doesn’t come on, there’s no error message although the words do highlight as I press on them but do not stay highlighted. I haven’t experienced anyhing like this reading in French or German. I reuploaded the book from different sources thinking maybe the source text was weird or something but it makes no difference. If I open the Readlang browser attachment on my desktop and try to select phrases on a text website of the story I get similar results; I can select phrases up to this point in the story but not here. On desktop the phrases will stay highlighted but will not translate and are not added to my vocabulary bank.
Note: I tried skipping ahead a few paragraphs later and it functions again. It’s almost like these particular words are tripping it up.
I uploaded a screen recording of the issue from my iPhone.
Interesting. On Chrome, Windows, I can duplicate this using a copy paste from az.lib.ru . It seems like certain sequences of words are not selectable this way, while others (even including some of the same words) are fine. I was not able to select:
потухает петербургское
чиновный народ наелся
сообразно с получаемым
получаемым жалованьем
собственной прихотью
после департаментского
департаментского скрыпенья
I only put the two pictured paragraphs (Но Акакий Акакиевич … берут их сами.) in the readlang text. If I paste the 2-3 word parts above alone in a text then they work. If I paste in the two paragraphs after that list, the selection problems remain in the two paragraphs. If I remove the first of the two paragraphs (“…лицу”), the problems remain.
I wonder if it has to do with the length. The first sentence of the second paragraph is 2816 characters.
But in fact if I just delete the very last word and period “развлечению.” the sequence “потухает петербургское” works. Even if I keep the period (just delete the word and have the period after никакому) it still works.
But having written that, I see this isn’t a fix: While “потухает петербургское” can now be selected, still “потухает петербургское серое небо” cannot be selected.
So the unselectable sequences seem a little unstable. Mysterious.
Thanks for looking into this. I’m certain now that you’re right that the sentence length is the problem, and your experiments provoked some of my own that can help me move on with studying thus text and that I think explain the problem. Within the paragraphs in question, I could select individual words which were then added to vocab. At this point there is still a failure message for the AI explanation. Then I look: the context that the program is pulling up for the word is massive: that huge sentence. When I trim it down to a clause or two in front and behind the word/phrase I wanted to highlight in the first place, voilà, the AI explanation is working fine.
