I play around a lot with languages, so I have quite a few of them that are listed in the first section of the drop down menu of languages where ones you have recently interacted with show up (as I have briefly looked at texts in them). However, now I seem to have hit a cap on the languages that can be listed there, and one I am actively studying (Norwegian) doesn’t show up, despite being my primary language at the moment.
Is there a way to change what languages show up there? Is there a limit (as I suspect there might be?)
Hmm, I have a lot more than that. From my own testing I’m under the impression that it lists all languages for which you have texts (and even texts sitting in “Deleted” count). But based on your explanation surely you would have some texts for Norwegian…?
I’ve just updated how this list of your active languages works. Now the most recent language(s) you’ve used will appear at the top in the order in which you last used them and the list length is capped to a maximum of 10 languages.
What counts as “using” a language for this purpose:
Contributing towards your daily goal by reading a text or practicing a word
Clicking to translate any word
(note that order of the list may not accurately reflect the order in which you most recently used each language at first, but each time you use a different language from now on it will be shifted to the top of the list so that over time the ordering will make sense)
I don’t know if it’s connected, but in the last couple of days I’ve had problems uploading texts. Several times I’ve uploaded a text in one language, and it’s appeared in another. I would also like to say that I prefer the old system of my languages always being in the same order. I regularly upload texts in three or four different languages in a day, and I find my list keeps changing order, which I find a little confusing.
After upload via the upload page, you should be taken straight to the My Texts section for the appropriate language where you’ll see your newly uploaded text at the top of your reading queue. Are you taken to the list of texts for the wrong language? Or are you taken to the correct list, but text isn’t there (since it’s in a different language)? or something else?
OK. I’ve changed it so that they are sorted alphabetically like before. (The rest of the new behavior of this list is still as I described in my previous message above)
Hi. Thanks for the quick reply, and for changing back to alphabetical order. I’ve just tried uploading in six different languages, and everything’s working fine.
What was happening before was that I’d select, say, Dutch, and upload the text, but it would open in the French selection. It’s possible I was hitting the wrong language due to the changing order, but I don’t think that was the case. It happened about four times, and after the first couple, I was being fairly careful.
Anyway, all seems OK now. Thanks again for that, and for this amazing platform.
I think it’s actually not working as intended. My 10 at the top does sort A through K, but studying languages alphabetically after K doesn’t bring those languages into the ten.
You’re absolutely right. I’ve just fixed it so it should be working now, although it may sometimes require a page reload before you see the updated list after using a new language.
