Explanations given by "switch explanations to [learned language]" are waaay too high level

Hi, could we have a setting for the native-language explanations to limit the complexity to some more approachable level? As learners, getting a C2-level explanation for an A2-level word doesn’t really help

ChatGPT seems to be able to understand these levels and can generate content at the requested level when asked.

Oh yeah, that’s a good point. I rarely use them myself because the explanation is long and ends up being more work than just reading the original. A real ELI5 explanation instead would be pretty great.

I’ve altered the part of the prompt which used to say:

Write your explanation in {{LANGUAGE}}.

to now say:

Write your explanation in simple {{LANGUAGE}}, suitable for a learner of the language who has never seen this word before.

This should hopefully make new explanations a bit easier more readable for beginners. (Please note that if you click on a word which has previously been explained in the same context it will continue to show you the old explanation)

Would be nice to have a general option for this, or I would have loved for the simpler take prior, but now I can read c1 French without serious problems; esp AI writing that tends to be standard and logical.

I just need to push more of my passive understanding to become deeper - and getting academic explanations is ideal for me.
So I would love for it to remain as it was, while seeing why it’s bad for many; so perhaps a A2, b1, B2, c1 option for the prompts?

Even just to be able to edit that prompt directly would be even better

Write your explanation in academic and direct {{LANGUAGE}}, suitable for an experienced (b2-c2) learner of the language; and keep it short.

Would be mine as an example (how I use AI currently).

I’m not keen on adding the complexity of multiple options at the moment but will bear this in mind in future. Please try it out as it is and perhaps let me know how you find it after using it for a while.

So just to clarify, if you set the explanations in the native language or first language they wont be simplified, but if set in the language your learning the explanations will be simpler ?

Yes, that’s correct. Explanations in your learning language should be simpler than they were before.

This won’t affect the majority of users since the majority use explanations in their first language.

If you do use these learning language explanations, please let me know if you think this is an improvement after using them for a while.

It’s ok in testing now, and still allows me to use the French - and it’s less verbose which in some ways is good as it was an issue with the old

I think I still preferred the old in ways, so for my use case it seems like a minor downgrade

It was also a problem prior that the English could offer more detail and break downs, and I’m worried that I’ll be tempted to use it over the French due to it, and I rather avoid reading in English as I study -_-;
