Cantonese support

I made a previous post about traditional Chinese characters, but as I’ve tried and failed to use the Chinese option with Cantonese, I’d like to just ask if you can add Cantonese as its own language.

Are there any particular difficulties adding Cantonese that I’m missing?

The Azure offers TTS for cantonese, and I’d expect that for the romanization features, just substituting asking the LLM for Jyutping instead of Pinyin should work fine? Right now the Mandarin TTS and also assuming Mandarin for explanations makes the “Chinese” mode for Cantonese not viable.

I’m getting a lot out of Readlang for Slovak and Tagalog, but I’d really like to not have to find another product for Cantonese.

I wonder if we really get the pinyin by asking an LLM, that seems like it would be wasteful.

A problem I used to have a lot with LLMs is that you ask for Cantonese and it actually just gives you Mandarin. But I think things have come a long way here.

If an obstacle is the need to create a simple lookup of one character → its Jyutping pronunciation(s), something that wouldn’t have to be perfect or complete (given that readlang is seemingly meant for people who can sort of read already), that seems like a surmountable challenge…
