Hi, apologies if this is answered somewhere already but I was wondering if someone could talk about a few of the features of Readlang specifically:
Can it translate whole sentences?
Can it play text to speech of a sentence? (Not just the whole transcript)
Is it good?
I have been using LingQ for just over two years and while there’s a lot I like about it, it has started to slow me down, due to public dictionaries, glitchy/slow imports, out of sync audio, incredibly long periods between clicking an unknown word waiting for the definition to appear, then having to change a convoluted definition, as well as it really struggling with separating Japanese words.
I’m no longer concerned with unknown words or word counts. I just want to be able to import text and have the experience be snappy and understandable, but if I can organise imports into folders that’d be a bonus.
I’ve only been using it for a day but it seems great, I particularly like being able to turn pages with just one button and increasing the font size through keyboard shortcuts.
Readlang can’t translate whole sentences at the moment. It was originally designed for people who can understand most of a text but need help with individual words and phrases. You can translate fairly long phrases by clicking and dragging across multiple words.
I’m not completely against adding the ability to translate whole sentences. The main reasons against doing it are a) the added complexity of the code and b) my uncertainty over how the UI should work. So it could happen, but I don’t have any short term plans.
Premium subscribers can enable text-to-speech for words and phrases you click to translate. This is called Speaking Mode: Speaking mode - Readlang Blog
Ps. The flash card system (if it’s working the way I think it is) by only creating flash cards of words I’ve actually clicked during a reading session at the end of the read, is actual perfection! I could never get on board with things like Anki due to the massive time sink in preparing the flash cards but this completely eliminates that problem!
Yes, a flashcard is generated immediately when you click to translate a word or phrase. If you think the flashcard won’t be useful to you, you can click it again to delete it: Delete Flashcards While Reading - Readlang Blog
