Bug: Words don't stay highlighted in Chinese

I tried changing the Translation Behavior settings, but there was no change. Every time I open a document, none of my words are underlined even though they appear in the word list.

I only started using Chinese when you introduced the pinyin feature, but this lack of underlining existing words has been a problem for me since then.

EDITED TO ADD:
The “Sentence Breaks” feature is also not working. Assuming this feature is based on a standard period and space between sentences, which Chinese doesn’t have. The 。alone should signify a sentence break. Would make reading a lot easier, as the font on the Chinese is a little heavy and long paragraphs are hard to parse on the screen.

Sorry, but the Auto-Highlight feature isn’t available in languages which don’t use spaces between words like Chinese. (There was a technical reason for this which I couldn’t remember so I tried enabling it to see what would happen and it would only highlight individual characters, not groups of characters, so there is a real limitation there that would need fixing to enable this)

Thanks for reporting the bug in Sentence Breaks for Chinese. It now supports Chinese using the 。 character to detect sentence breaks.

Thanks for checking it out! It’s too bad, since I’ve found myself highlighting the same words on occasion, and it would really help to be able to recognize words I have trouble with repeatedly.

Also, thanks for the sentence breaks! Being able to break up blocks of long text will make reading slightly easier. 感謝！

This is now supported.

Saved words in your Word List now get underlined when they appear in texts you read in Chinese, and the same applies to Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Cantonese.

The setting is off by default, so to switch it on:

  1. Refresh your Readlang browser tab
  2. Open a text to read
  3. If the sidebar isn’t visible, click the button at the top right of the page to open it
  4. Click to open the Settings tab within the sidebar
  5. Under Auto-Highlight Words, select “All Your Words” (or “Ready To Learn” if you’d rather only see the words which are due for review)

Please let me know if you notice any problems with this.

Thank you so much! I’ll admit I’ve been focusing on other languages instead of Chinese for ages due to this bug, so now I have no excuse for not reading!
