Beginning a few days ago, after Blitz System Take a LONG Time go Give a New Prompt

I believe this only started a few of days ago. Did you change anything which would affect how the scoring runs after a Blitz practice? At first I discounted it as a network hangup, but I no longer thing that explains it.

I usually do a 25 word Blitz first – and then another. But the frist one now usually takes minutes before it finishes cycling and comes back with a new prompt. I currently have one which has probably been cycling for hours.

I can switch to the home tab and the hangup continues (waiting). I can tab back to the Practice tab and it continues cycling. It is faster if I just completely reload readlang – and that doesn’t seem right, so I don’t think it is a network issue on my side. Alternately I can switch to the words tab and get a normal prompt immediately. But when I tab back it is still cycling.

I will keep my eyes open for any additional information I can give you and try to let you know if the odd, AND ANNOYING behavior goes away.

When you say “cycling”, do you mean that it’s in this state?

Or do you mean that you’ve clicked Start Practice and it shows “Loading…” like this?

Or do you mean something else? (a screenshot would be helpful)

I’ve just fixed an issue that might have been the cause of this, although I’m not 100% sure. Please be sure to let me know if it happens again.

Just happened again. The only tabs which I can go to and use correctly are Word-list and Library. All the others are hung. I can switch between the hung tabs and they remain hung. A complete reload is generally best. Although I have observed, in the past…not today, some cases where the problem eventually resolves itself (after some indeterminate amount of time…but too much time and too indeterminate to be worth waiting). I don’t think it is a factor, but FYI this is Brave browser on Mac.

It MAY be related to the fact that these are practice tabs which I opened or started yesterday but didn’t finish/start until today? I’m not sure about that last statement, but it seems to happen most of the time with my first practice of the morning.

I will look to capture a screen shot next time it happens…I know how to capture a screen shot on Mac, but how do I upload it for display here? Do I just save it as a file and then use the upload button above? On the practice screen it just shows as a cycling circle…the typical waiting icon.

It’s happening to me now… the words take a while to show the translation, but it’s not my connection because I tried with 3 different wifi

very slow to show the translation even though the voice is coming out. And the explaining AI sometimes gives an error.

I’ve noticed that OpenAI requests are slow and some have failed recently, which is confirmed on their status page (https://status.openai.com/). I think that’s the most likely explanation in this case.

On macOS, I normally copy screenshots of an area of the screen to the clipboard using SHIFT+CTRL+CMD+4 and then I would paste it into the forum using CMD+V.

I’m still struggling to figure out what might be going wrong in your case.

From today (2025-06-10) around morning European Central Time, the API latency has gone up.

The translate API takes around 10-15 seconds

The smartDictionary API takes about 20-30 seconds

Which means the “Explain” tab would first time out and show “Problem loading explanation, try again” (or something along that line) and then once the content are fully streamed, it appears suddenly.

Would be interesting to fall back to a local dictionary if the AI-based single word explanation does not load in time. I would say only 20% of the time I need the smart, context aware translation. Most of the time I’m still learning basic vocabulary.

(Screenshot for the smartDicitionary API call, since I’m only allow to upload one picture per post)

@Shing_Lyu Thanks for reporting that. It’s almost certainly due to issues with OpenAI’s API at the moment: https://status.openai.com/. Hopefully they get it fixed soon.

Thank you, Steve. You are awesome, please never stop this great job :folded_hands:
