Not sure this needs much more explanation - I’ve got a daily reading goal for 2025 and it’s not 500 words.
In fact my preference would be to have two separate goals, words read and flashcards per day. But the current mixed goal with the ability to set my own numbers would still be a major improvement for me.
Just a feature request, no intention of complaining at all.
Readlang feels like what I hoped the internet would be 15 years ago - a thing that uses cool technology put together thoughtfully to make my life better. I can’t say how refreshing it is to just be allowed to use a site for its intended purpose without dodging my way through a maze of marketing crap first.
I’m planning to add a more detailed stats page that will allow you to inspect your activity like words read over a longer time span than a week like what’s currently shown. As a part of this work I’ll consider accommodating different daily goals too, no promises though.
Hi superluser! I am wondering if you can get something equivalent to what you say you want by just going every day to the “Home” screen and looking at the day-to-day graph lines and, if necessary, hovering over the bars to see the stats?
Scraping from my Home graph: “You Have A 376 Day Streak! … Words Read 5987 …
Words Practiced 125”. Trying to maintain the trend line is taking HOURS every day, already – and just looking at the Home Page graph, and ancillary figures, provides everything for me, and more, already, than I would expect your requested feature to provide.
Right now, as I write this, I am feeling a fair amount of anxiety, in fact, because “125” words/phrases practiced is way below my ideal of at least the 250-300 I need just to keep the “(17970 words ready)” figure on the Blitz Practice screen from climbing back over 18,000. (I started with the number closer to 35,000…and I battled it down by spending, on average, probably four hours a day, going as fast as I could, generally averaging at least 500 words and phrases reviewed a day, to work through the backlog. But it is climbing again, anyway, as I keep reading.
In 2025 I’ve vowed to begin concentrating a lot more time on actually speaking and writing (conversation skills). I’m actually feeling some anxiety right now because I’ve already put in several hours today, just trying to keep my numbers up, but I’ve not really practiced any writing nor dialogue, yet.
Anyway, I’m just suggesting you might already have all – or at least most of – what you seem to be requesting by just going regularly to the Home and Practice screens. I can’t imagine any artificial target numbers would produce even half the incentive (anxiety) to practice that the screen numbers and graphs already provide. At least not for me!
Sr - Thanks for your thoughts! Not sure I follow exactly but that sounds a lot more involved than what I had in mind. I just want to try to read a substantial news article or a chapter of a book every day, say around 1000-2000 words, and have a simple way of tracking whether I’m hitting that goal consistently or not.
Steve - awesome, I look forward to seeing what you’re cooking! Lmk if you want a beta tester.
I think what @Sr1 is suggesting is using the data on your dashboard page (Readlang) to see how many words you’ve read each day. You can hover over the data for each of the past 7 days in order to see how many words you read and practiced on that day like this:
Also, if you click on the streak indicator at the top of the page, even while you are within the reading interface, it will show you these same stats for today:
That way, you could check to see if you’ve met your personal goal even if it’s more than the 500 word goal pre-programmed into Readlang right now. (I realize that this won’t be as convenient for you as being able to change the goal Readlang uses for it’s streak, but it might be useful as a workaround.)
